Tech Tips: Simple Fixes for Common Computer Problems
Simple fixes worth trying first.
These quick checks solve many everyday problems without making things worse. Stop if a device is unusually hot, smells burnt or shows signs of physical damage.

Each fix below answers one common question. Work through them in order, or jump to the one you need.
My computer is slow. What should I try?
Save your work, restart the computer, then reopen only the apps you need. Check that at least 15–20% of the main drive is free. If the slowdown returns, note which app was open and whether the fan was running loudly.
My Wi-Fi keeps dropping. What is the safest reset?
First check whether the problem affects one device or everything. If every device is offline, unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect the modem first, wait for it to settle, then reconnect the router. Avoid pressing the small factory-reset button.
A printer says offline. How do I reconnect it?
Confirm the printer and computer are on the same Wi-Fi network, clear any paused print jobs, then restart both devices. If it still shows offline, remove and re-add the printer rather than installing software from an unfamiliar download site.
I received a suspicious pop-up, email or call. What now?
Do not click links, call the number shown or install remote-access software. Close the page or message, disconnect from the internet if you already opened a file, and contact Essential Technology or the organization through a number you already trust.
What information helps before I call?
Write down the exact error message, when the issue began, what changed just before it started and which devices are affected. A photo of the screen can help, but never include a password, verification code or financial information.
